Monsal Trail – New Years Day
Four former railway tunnels have reopened to walkers, cyclists and horse riders after more than 40 years.
The tunnels, on the Peak District’s Monsal Trail, were last used in 1968 when the line between Buxton and Bakewell was closed as a result of the Beeching report.
The work is part of the £2.25m Pedal Peak District project to encourage more people to cycle in the park.
To clear the cobwebs & prepare for 2012 we decided to test out the Monsal trail not our usual walking haunt as we usually step off from Wetton for usual Dovedale etc… but was a cracking route with some decent climbs off the redundant railway line.
It was rather busy on the main railway route & too many cyclists for our liking, I would recommend a mid-week visit to miss the mayhem, views from the viaducts are breathtaking, photos attached also show the impressive nature to be seen.
Homeward bound I would recommend the Bluebell Inn at Tissington, good beer & food.
